IBEW and Electric Trucks: The Future of Automotive

Up until recently, the electric vehicle market has struggled to convince Americans to move toward environmentally-friendly options. Trucks, while practical and powerful, often fail to meet the increasingly stringent environmental standards being put into law, but are very popular. Instead of doubling down on their fuel-powered vehicles, many manufacturers are viewing the electric market, specifically electric trucks, as the future of the automotive industry. Tesla’s Cybertruck and Dodge’s Hummer EV are set to release soon, and will be just as capable if not more powerful than their predecessors. If offered the opportunity to purchase American made electric trucks, consumers will gladly make upgrades that meet their personal needs and satisfaction while helping preserve the environment. This isn’t only good for the automotive industry, but an opportunity for union groups to expand and thrive.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) is a labor union with workers all across the country in a variety of industries. The industry shifting toward electric vehicle production is a massive economic opportunity for union workers to support this transition. The vehicles need to be built, and they need to be powered by the results of electrical workers’ efforts. Billions of dollars are already being spent to support factory transformations that will support electric production because investors recognize the potential that electronic trucks offer. Up until now, the difference in performance between electric and non-electric trucks was too severe and noticeable to spark excitement about EVs. As technology has developed, however, and more of an emphasis has been placed on EV performance, electric trucks hitting the market as soon as 2021 will be just as powerful, which is exciting many truck fans around the country.

For years, many have questioned whether moving away from traditional combustion engines could hurt the automotive industry because EV demand was so low. But now, consumers, manufacturers, and union workers are all becoming more excited about the opportunity for growth in the industry. Amazon has already committed to using over 100,000 electric delivery vans in the next 10 years. Electronic plants, which are often created by union groups and are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, are popping up all across the U.S. Instead of the underwhelming response we have come to expect after EV reveals, more recent announcements have sparked fanfare and anticipation unlike any we’ve seen before.

At Union Auto Program, we recognize electric vehicles as the future of the automotive industry. To get there, though, plants need to be built and factories need to be sustained. This presents a vast opportunity for new jobs, particularly within union groups and the IBEW. The growth of electric power will employ many workers and will help protect the environment while stimulating the economy, which are all excellent goals to strive for. Popular electric vehicles are being made by union workers, which creates jobs for IBEW members.

Union Group Highlight: IATSE Local 479

Based in Georgia, IATSE Local 479 is dedicated to unionism and worker representation in the motion picture industry. In recent years, the filmmaking industry has grown significantly in Georgia, leading to some calling it “the Hollywood of the south.” This group has worked tirelessly to ensure fair wages and working conditions for their members. Working with local and state legislatures when necessary, IATSE Local 479 is willing to do whatever it takes to protect their member’s rights.

UAP Highlight IATSE Local 479

Their members receive healthcare and retirement plans that set them up for a prosperous future. By working on union-negotiated projects, members receive funds for these important necessities. During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, IATSE helped many of its members file for unemployment. During these difficult times, IATSE even offered free classes for its members to set themselves apart and get back into the workforce. In an effort to safely reopen from the pandemic, this union has abided by public health and safety guidelines like social distancing and PPE to prevent further spread. As one of IATSE’s members put it, “They petition for your rights in the government constantly … I would rather be unionized than not any day of the week.” We commend the commitment IATSE Local 479 has made to its members.

The geniuses behind the scenes who turn fantasies into reality, these members help with all aspects of motion picture production from special effects makeup to lighting and set design. At Union Auto Program, we like to show appreciation for union groups that have their members’ interests in mind and fight to protect them every day.

Cadillac Going EV By 2030

To keep up with increasing regulatory measures and environmentally conscious solutions, Cadillac is committing to releasing mostly electric vehicles by the year 2030. Along with this change, Cadillac will also revert to more traditional model names rather than their current numbers and letters. A fully electric Cadillac SUV is expected to hit the market in 2023, and the response it receives will indicate a public perception of the brand’s move toward EV.

Cadillac going EV by 2030

An environmentally – friendly commitment clean solutions and new names
An environmentally - friendly commitment Cadillac going EV by 2030 cleand solurions and new names

Earlier this year, GM stated that Cadillac would soon become General Motors’ lead electric vehicle brand, while other GM brands like GMC and Buick will slowly transition toward EV. Each type of vehicle from sedans to SUVs will eventually be available fully electric. Climate activists have praised this commitment and said that other automakers should make the same efforts. According to a carbonbrief.com article, “Electric vehicles (EVs) are an important part of meeting global goals on climate change.” (Hausfather)

To build excitement for these models, they will be given more engaging and memorable names than current models like the XT4 or CT5. With names more in line with current popular models like the Escalade, Cadillac hopes that the new EVs gain market popularity to justify this environmentally friendly decision.

Union Auto Program is glad to see that automakers are developing electrical vehicles that keep consumers’ best interests in mind. As more details emerge regarding what these vehicles will have to offer, we will break them down in detail. Until then, you can browse our wide range of Cadillac vehicles.

The 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Known for its supercar performance and sleek appearance, the Chevrolet Corvette is one of the most iconic vehicles on the market. 2021’s iteration of this household model promises to make significant improvements from its predecessor. The two-seater is spacious enough to be a comfortable daily driver, but its impressive engine keeps it fun enough that the novelty won’t wear off anytime soon.

Packing a Punch The 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Another iteration of the iconic model, coming soon…
Another iteration of the iconic model, coming soon

Available as a coupe or convertible, the three models (1LT, 2LT, and 3LT) are all impressive, but the top-of-the-line model looks particularly special. Features like heated seats, blind-spot protection, and high-quality Bose speakers accompany the 2nd and 3rd editions at a fair price increase.

One major change this time around is the engine placement, which is behind the passenger compartment instead of conventionally in the front of the vehicle. Performance isn’t hindered by this, though, as the engine will still roar. The 6.2-liter V8 will have an impressive 495 horsepower that will pack a punch. The model will also feature an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for the first time, making for a smooth but speedy ride for its passengers. Fuel efficiency will stay the same from the last model to this one, coming in at 15mpg city and 27mpg city. Limited storage capacity is somewhat limited, but is made up for by an infotainment and Wi-Fi hotspot.

Clearly not the most practical purchase available, the Chevrolet Corvette is still doing what it has always done best, which is providing a fun-to-drive eye candy at a more obtainable price point than Lamborghini or Ferrari offers. We’re impressed with what we’ve seen so far and will monitor further details that emerge about the 2021 Corvette before its upcoming release.

Union Spotlight: NFL Players Association

This weekend, the NFL season will come to an end when the Kansas City Chiefs visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to compete for the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LV. Football is one of America’s most iconic pastimes, bringing people from all walks of life together to cheer for their favorite teams. None of this would be possible, however, without the league’s Players Association, which is the union that protects players’ rights from quarterbacks to punters and everyone in-between. Founded in 1956, the NFLPA has advocated for players from every era and continues to leave a positive impact on everyone involved.

Union spotlight: NFL players association

Union spotlight: NFL players association

Like many other unions, the NFLPA allows players to stand up for their health, rights, and protections. It’s easy to think of NFL athletes as superhumans, but at the end of the day, they are doing their job and need protections similar to other trades. As time has passed, changes to the game’s rules and standards have been made to protect players from injuries. Helmet technology allows for greater protection to player’s heads, which has long been a point of concern from fans. Certain types of tackles that were once legal but dangerous are now penalized to protect players. These changes have been made possible through negotiations brought forward in large part by the NFLPA.

The NFLPA’s current collective bargaining agreement, which will last through 2030, provides essential protections for NFL players around the league. These include increased revenue shares, higher minimum salaries, expanded roster capacity, and more. The NFLPA isn’t only focused on its own players, either. Charitable donations are made to a variety of organizations in the union’s name, and these efforts often provide avenues for former players to transition into the next phase of their professional career post-NFL. The union is made up of elected representative players from each team who speak for their teammate’s interests and desires. The union meets fairly regularly to ensure that the protocols being followed are up-to-date and all-encompassing.

Soon enough, we will all be watching the big game, enjoying the halftime show, eating snacks, and making sure not to skip the commercials. For now, though, it’s important to show recognition and appreciation for the NFLPA, which makes all of that possible in the first place. Unions provide much-needed support for workers across America, and the Union Auto Program stands in solidarity with them always.

Fight for $15: Unions Win Big in Florida

On the night of the presidential election, Floridians discovered that their state voted to pass a $15 minimum wage requirement. This legislation has been supported and advocated for by union members for years. More than six million Florida residents voted in favor of Amendment 2, which will increase the wages of 2.5 million low-wage workers across the state.

Florida passes $15/hr wage

Amendment 2 will help millions of workers in the Sunshine State
 - Amendment 2 will help millions of workers in the Sunshine State

The “Fight for $15” movement started years ago to provide low-wage service workers a dignified salary enough to support themselves modestly. The federal minimum wage of $7.25 hasn’t increased the same way living, education, and other costs have, putting many workers under the poverty line. This bill’s passing is likely to benefit many different demographics in the Sunshine State.

Many think this accomplishment is a direct result of the coronavirus pandemic, which saw low-wage frontline workers risking their safety and health to serve their communities. These efforts are finally being recognized and appreciated, as shown by the allocation of funds to these workers’ salaries. This Amendment’s passing is a reminder of how effective and useful collective bargaining can be in the workplace.

The Red, White, and Blue of America: Insights From Richard Ray

Richard Ray is a lifelong member, leader, and advocate for Unions in the southeast United States. For years, he was involved with the AFL-CIO, even serving as Georgia State AFL-CIO’s president for over a decade. Retired now but still President Emeritus at Georgia State AFL-CIO, Ray is still very politically active in union matters. Last week, Union Auto Program was fortunate enough to sit down for a phone interview with Ray, who imparted wisdom from his years of union experience. The topics ranged from the benefits of being a union worker and advice for young union members to his dream car and how he met Union Auto Program CEO John Perez. Dynamic, informative, and entertaining, Ray gracefully shared some of the wisdom and knowledge he has gained from years of working with unions.

The Red, White, and Blue of America: Insights From Richard Ray

The Red, White, and Blue of America: Insights From Richard Ray

Ray began by stating that a large number of young adults and students who are considering college would be better suited pursuing a trade school education. To Ray, misguidance from high school counselors sometimes encourage students to make decisions without knowing about their alternatives options, leading to consequences like student loans. Instead, Ray views apprenticeship programs as a more reliable method for some to further their education and find essential jobs like plumbing or electrical work. These positions, when acquired through union membership, secure healthcare and other benefits for members, and provide a level of peace of mind through job security that non-union workers miss out on.

Those protections and securities are what Ray views as the key benefits of being a union member. Instead of having a voice of one, union members are able to collectively rely on their union leaders to negotiate fair conditions and treatment by employers. Knowing that your boss isn’t going to erroneously fire you without citing a valid cause isn’t something that union members have to worry about. Union contracts incentivize employees to work hard and employers to hold up their end of the bargain. Ray believes that the union dues that members pay are worth it because of the protections and permission to focus solely on doing their jobs well.

Union leaders get a lot out of their positions, as well, according to Ray. Being an elected representative for a group of hardworking union members instills confidence in union leaders. This act of being selected demonstrates that leaders are trusted and can be expected to help others selflessly and consistently. Ray says that his time as a union leader allowed him to sleep well at night knowing that the collective bargaining efforts he participated in led to real benefits in other people’s lives.

Being a union member is as rewarding as you make it, according to Ray. He encourages young union members to get involved as much as possible among their ranks, whether that be through volunteering or any other form of participation. Ray recommends that young union members pay attention to history, perform kind acts for their communities, and stay active in their unions. When asked what has defined unions over the years, Ray described a consistency in a fight to survive that has stayed true for union members for decades. The political implications also remain similar, as some support unions and others do not, even if the specific faces and names involved change over time. The general concept of unions has miraculously stayed the same, even as culture and technology have continued to evolve over the years.

Technological advancement is made no clearer than in the electric vehicle industry, which we have discussed in-depth on this blog. Ray views the shift from combustion engines to electric vehicles as inevitable, which will create a real opportunity for job creation, specifically in trade-friendly circles like those so often occupied by union members. Ray believes that automakers are moving in the right direction, and is excited to see automakers like Ford releasing electric versions of their beloved models. Ray views the future as an opportunity and believes that unions will continue to adapt to the times just as they always have.

Ray described his experience meeting Union Auto Program CEO John Perez as a positive one. Friends still, the two met when Perez told Ray his genuine and inspiring life story. When Perez approached Ray about starting the Union Auto Program, Ray recognized the passion and authenticity that Perez brought to the table. The sincerity Ray sensed led to a partnership and friendship that continues to this day.

The phone interview ended on a fun note, as we asked Ray what his dream car is. He told us that he’s lucky enough to have it sitting out in his driveway. A lifelong Chevrolet driver, the Chevy Traverse stands for everything Ray needs out of a dream vehicle. American-made, dependable, and sustainable, his choice of a dream car reflects his union values, and it does so in style.

Unionism is an American practice that is here to stay. Countless union members and Americans have benefitted from the collective bargaining and negotiations put forward by union members and their leaders over time. It was a privilege to sit down and speak with Richard Ray, whose experience and knowledge help grant a better understanding of the importance of unions and their loyal, hardworking members.

The 2021 Ford Bronco

Ford fans are excitedly awaiting next year’s release of the beloved Bronco model, which is returning with more innovative features than ever before. Retro style and impressive off-road abilities will likely make up for the lack of a V8 engine many had hoped for. Available in either two or four-door layouts, and starting at the reasonable MSRP of $29,995, the new Bronco is expected to stay competitive against similar vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler or Chevy Blazer, whose inventory has held steady through the coronavirus.

Coming son… The 2021 Ford Bronco

The beloved model returns more impressive than ever before

Arriving Mid Year 2021, the reinvented Bronco will release alongside the Bronco Sport for customers, not in need of the full model’s power. The base vehicle will run customers just under $30,000, but any upgrades start to get expensive quickly. The Wildtrak, for example, which will feature a 2.7L EcoBoost engine and 35-inch tires, will start at $46,980. The Bronco’s supposed 3,500-pound towing power will match its competitors’.

The specs don’t stop impressing at the engine or exterior, either. An either 8 or 12-inch touchscreen sits comfortably in the vehicle’s dashboard, a sign that Ford is committed to offering the best tech available. This will allow users to connect their smartphones for seamless transitions when they’re ready to hit the road. Forward-collision warnings and blindspot surveillance capabilities ensure driver safety when behind the wheel of the brand new Bronco.

Improved Q3 numbers show that Americans’ love of big vehicles has kickstarted the industry’s recovery from the economic hardship of the pandemic. Exciting new releases like the 2021 Ford Bronco signal stability that manufacturers and consumers are both looking for right now – and we hope to see many more on the horizon.

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator reprises a beloved feature that hasn’t been seen on a Jeep brand vehicle since the 1990s: a cargo bed. This versatile and practical addition differentiates the Gladiator from Jeep’s other offerings like the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. A powerful mid-size pickup truck, the newest Gladiator is the perfect choice for anyone looking for muscle within the Jeep brand.

The Gladiator is powered by a 285 horsepower V6 engine and either a manual or automatic transmission, providing enough punch and customization for any type of customer. Off-road ready, the new Gladiator is perfect for commuting to work or taking time to explore away from the beaten path. Newly improved ground clearance ensures that the Gladiator isn’t damaged when taking on unknown terrain.

The cargo bed makes a triumphant comeback

The interior is user-friendly and spacious, emulating many of the design elements found in the Wrangler. The Gladiator’s legroom is generous and sizable, allowing for a comfortable ride for passengers. Every model comes with an infotainment display system and optional smartphone integration. Another appealing feature is the abundance of charging ports found throughout, which ensures that electronic devices are always powered up for long road trips to new destinations.

The newest Gladiator is impressive. While the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler are Jeep’s two best-selling models, the newest Gladiator’s inclusion of a cargo bed could very well change that. Trucks are wildly popular in the industry, and Jeep’s newest release is taking advantage of that.
